LJ Names KPL a 5-Star Library...
The Kilbourn Public Library recently received the highest rating possible - five stars - in Library Journal’s Index of Public Library Service. Library Journal is one of the oldest and most respected journals in the library field. Out of 7,115 public libraries, only 256 received star ratings of three, four or five stars. Of those 256 only 84 earned 5 stars. The ranking system used was devised by Keith Curry Lance and Ray Lyons and is similar to Michelin and Mobil guides used for restaurant and hotels. The ranking system measured four key factors: number of people visiting the library, number of items circulated, Internet computer use and attendance at library programs. Only three libraries in Wisconsin were starred libraries and your library wasthe only one to receive 5 stars. Out of all 256 starred libraries, the Kilbourn Public Library ranked third in the nation for Internet terminal uses per capita. The ranking validates that both members and guests value the Kilbourn Public Library and the services and materials that we provide. Thank you for making your library a 5-Star Library.
How do we rate with you?
As many of you know the library is currently evaluating the materials, services and programs your library provides. The library board has recently hired MSA, an architect firm, to guide us through a space needs analysis. This analysis will eventually guide the board in deciding if a library expansion project is needed and what the project should include. We need your help in making these decisions. We have put together a survey to help us determine what is important to you. Surveys will be sent home with all students attending school in the Wisconsin Dells School District. They are also available at the library, on the bookmobile and at many area banks. The survey may also be completed online on the library website www.dellslibrary.org. The survey is available in Spanish and in English. The surveys will also be available at two public discussions on library services. Here’s your chance to let us hear what you think. The discussions will be held Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at the Kay C. Mackesey Building in Lake Delton and on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Kilbourn Public Library Community Center. Please attend one of these meetings and help decide the future of your library.

Passenger Pigeon Program
Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m., Kelly Bleich, environmental historian, author, artist and educator will present a program about the Passenger Pigeon and provide insight into the extinct bird’s history. He will share his collection of thought provoking materials including a drawing of Martha, the last passenger pigeon. The Bowman House has in its display a stuffed passenger pigeon. This program, jointly sponsored by the Friends of the Kilbourn Public Library and the Dells Country Historical Society, will discuss how the passenger pigeon, once the most abundant bird in North America was systematically decimated. Refreshments will be served.
Sail Into a Good Read
The Library Book Club selection for March is Sail: a Novel by James Patterson. This book will captivate the reader from the very beginning.. Since her husband died, Anne Dunne has struggled to bring her three children together for a family vacation, so she plans a summer sailing trip on her late husband’s sailboat. The Dunne family soon find themselves trapped in paradise and fighting for their lives. This is one thriller that will not disappoint with an unbelievably shocking ending. Pick up a copy of Sail at the library and join us. The book club meets the 4th Monday and Wednesday of each month at the library. Join us Monday, March 23 at 6:30 pm or Wednesday, March 25 at 1:30 pm. New members are always welcome! No time for meetings? You can still join us by visiting our website and linking to our book club blog.
