The Bookmobile is Coming,
the Bookmobile is Coming!
HELP!
The Kilbourn Public Library is pleased to announce the addition of a bookmobile to our services. The library has purchased a Dodge Sprinter Van to be converted for use as a bookmobile. The bookmobile will be making stops at various locations in Wisconsin Dells and Lake Delton, and in the surrounding communities. We are still finalizing the bookmobile’s schedule but look for it booking on down the road early this summer. Along with putting the finishing touches on the schedule we are also in the process of putting the finishing touches on the van itself. We want the bookmobile to stand out and represent the ideas and creativity of the entire community. And this is where we need your HELP. Along with Starbucks in Wisconsin Dells, the library is sponsoring an idea search. Help us name and design the graphics for the bookmobile. Pick up an idea form at the library or at Starbucks in Wisconsin Dells. Sketch or print your ideas in the form. Anyone can share their ideas. All contributed ideas will be sent to a graphic artist who will use them for inspiration when creating the final design. Best of all, just for turning in your completed form at Starbucks you will receive a free
cup of coffee.

Looking Ahead...to SUMMER
Here at the library, the staff is counting the days until summer and getting ready to offer you some awesome summer programs. Here’s a heads up on the fun summery stuff so you can get us on your calendar now! The 2008 Summer Reading Program is for all young people. Starting with the Read-to-Me age through young adult everyone can participate this summer by reading for prizes, specially themed story hours, movies and programs. We have five special performances scheduled for the summer both here and at the Lake Delton school. This year’s theme for the younger children is “Catch the Reading Bug” while teens can participate in a “Metamorphosis at the Library”. Three sessions of the ever popular KPL Day Camp will take place this summer beginning with Candyland in June, Olympic Gold in July and Dog Days of Summer in August. The adult summer reading program invites you to Cruise through the Summer by reading great books and winning great prizes. Tuesday Tue-Dos for adults will continue through the summer and we have fun things planned for those second and fourth Tuesdays of the summer months. Every Saturday programming will continue all summer long with two very special Saturdays to start out the summer. Special Summer Signup Days on June 7 here at the library and June 14 at the Lake Delton School will kick off the summer. Look for more information about summer programming in the next few weeks and in next month’s newsletter.
Special Dells History Program
Historian Richard D. Durbin, author of The Wisconsin River: An Odyssey Through Time and Space has written a new book titled The Kilbourn Dam: A Tale of Hopes, Dreams and Schemes. Durbin’s book recounts the intrigue, bitter contention, violence and financial misdeeds surrounding the development and construction of the Kilbourn Dam located here in Wisconsin Dells. On Tuesday, May 13 at 7:00 pm, the author will discuss this new book and have copies available to the public for the first time. This free program is sponsored jointly by the Dells County Historical Society, The Stewards of the Dells and The Friends of the Kilbourn Library. It will be held in the community center room here at the library and is open to the general public. Refreshments will be served.
Take a chance on Lottery
Library Book Club Selection for May
This month the library book club will be reading Lottery by Patricia Wood. According to the author’s website this is “a funny, poignant and wise novel”. According to the library staff this is a “great read”. The first sentence of the book reads “My name is Perry L. Crandall and I am not retarded”. We find out that Perry is right, and not only is he right, he is the most capable and wisest character in the book. Lottery is an incredible novel about characters that come to life and live forever in your heart. The book club is always open to new members. In May we will be meeting to discuss the book on Monday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 21 at 1:30 pm. Join us here at the library or join us by sending a comment to our book club blog. You can access the blog from our library webpage.
Staff Picks
Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell illuminates the history of the Middle East in a great novel. Two recommended titles straight from the movies are Into the Wild by John Krakauer and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy. For a first hand account of life inside the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (FDLS) read Carolyn Jessop’s Escape. And Anne Tyler’s Breathing Lessons is a great read. Happy Reading!
