Thank You For Being a Friend

November is a busy month here at the library and it is also the perfect time to recognize a group of people who are instrumental in making the Kilbourn Public Library the great place that it is.

The Friends of the Kilbourn Library's mission statement states their goal is to be an advocate for the library by developing programs to meet current community needs: to provide volunteer support for the library, to help raise funds to meet special library needs and to encourage the broadest use of the library's facilities, materials and services. That sounds like a tall order but the Friends do that and so much more for the library year after year.

Each year the Friends hold three book sales that raise thousands of dollars to support the library. Our Friends group works on the sales almost year round: sorting, researching, pricing, setting up the sales, running the sales and completing the dreaded job of clean up. This month the Friends help out with the daunting task of inventory. Again, they are there for every task involved, even bringing in food to sustain the workers.

Other Friends projects include Apples for Teachers, hosting the library Open House in January and sponsoring special events throughout the year. In addition to all this, over 40 volunteers work in the library on a regular basis helping with daily tasks. Thank you hardly seems enough - but THANK YOU. To all the Friends that support the library, no matter if it is one hour a month or several hours a week, we couldn't do it without your helping hands and thoughtful hearts.

Library Will Be Closed for Inventory

Library Closed November 10th - 15th

Beginning November 10 the library will be closed, but you can bet the library staff will be hard at work. Staff members and volunteers will spend a week doing an inventory of several sections of the extensive library collection. Doing an inventory of our collection on a yearly basis helps keep the collection organized, current and complete. This helps you - our library patron, by making sure that books are where they should be when you look for them, that the information and titles we have on the shelf are up to date and accurate, and that we have a wide variety of titles that encompass all areas of interest.

Inventory is done every year at this time utilizing the inventory resources provided by South Central Library System. Basically, inventory is done by scanning the barcodes of every item in a collection into either portable units or our staff computers. The information is then loaded into inventory software that gives us reports of problem or missing items.  After searching out the individual items, we are then able to reconcile these problems. Wow - we really are going to be hard at work! The inventory software requires that all staff computers be dedicated to inventory only so we have to ask your cooperation in understanding that no check out or hold placement or pickup will be possible during this week. Please plan accordingly. The library will reopen Monday, November 17.

Hip, Hip, Turkey

Turkey

November is a very busy month here at the library but we made sure to save some time for fun programming.  We kick off the month with two Saturdays that are all about the BIRD.  Join us for Hip, Hip, Turkey - A Celebration of the Turkey.  Come to the library on  Saturday, November 1 at 10:00 am for stories, crafts and fun.  Then on Saturday, November 8 at Lake Delton School, join us for Hip, Hip, Turkey - Celebration 2.  And this time the sequel will be just as good as the original. We’ll have more stories and crafts, and of course even more fun.  Hip, Hip, Turkey!   There will be no programming on Saturday, November 15 due to inventory but we are back the next Saturday for Craft Day.  Come in anytime between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 22 for a Holiday Craft.  Kris will be getting us in the holiday spirit with holiday ornament making.  We will have the supplies you need to make a few special ornaments for yourself or to give away.

Saturday, November 29 is 5th Saturday Family Fun Day and we’ll be playing BINGO.  Take a break from the leftover turkey.  Bring the whole family or a group of friends and join us for a few games of BINGO, snacks and prizes.

Library Book Club

John Irving is a bestselling author and a favorite of the library staff. The November book club selection is one of Irving’s best.  A Widow for One Year offers a view of the life of Ruth Cole during three different periods of her life.  Beginning at age 4, the author gives us insight to Ruth’s bittersweet life and the life choices she makes. This multi-generational tale is a must read.

The library book club meets the fourth Monday evening and Wednesday afternoon of each month.  We are always looking for new members so pick up a copy of A Widow for One Year here at the library and join us.  We will be meeting  Monday, November 24 at 6:30 pm and Wednesday, November 26 at 1:30 pm at  the library.  Join us here for snacks and engaging discussion.
