Library Closed for Inventory

The Library will be closed from Monday, November 2 through Saturday, November 7. We will reopen Monday, November 9 at 9:00 am.

Beginning November 2 the library and bookmobile will be closed, but you can bet the library staff will be hard at work.  Staff members and volunteers will spend a week doing an inventory of several sections of the extensive library collection.  Doing an inventory of our collection on a yearly basis helps keep the collection organized, current and complete.   This helps you - our library patron, by making sure that books are where they should be when you look for them, that the information and titles we have on the shelf are up to date and accurate, and that we have a wide variety of titles that encompass all areas of interest.   Inventory is done every year at this time utilizing the inventory resources provided by South Central Library System.  Basically, inventory is done by scanning the barcodes of every item in a collection into either portable units or our staff computers.  The information is then loaded into inventory software that gives us reports of problem or missing items.  After searching out the individual items, we are then able to reconcile these problems.  Wow - we really are going to be hard at work!  The inventory software requires that all staff computers be dedicated to inventory only so we have to ask your cooperation in understanding that no check out or hold placement or pickup will be possible during this week.  Please plan accordingly.  The library will reopen Monday, November 9.

November Happenings

November is a very busy month here at the library but we made sure to save some time for fun programming.

We kick off the month with a Delicious Harvest DayCome to the Lake Delton School on Saturday, November 14 at 10:00 am and listen to stories about harvesting fall foods and enjoy some tasty samples.  Charlotte will also have a fun scarecrow craft. Celebrate the harvest with us.

Saturday, November 21 at 10:00 am is Movie Day at the library.  Join us for the new DVD release of Up Fly high with us as we watch the adventures of a 78 year old balloon salesman and his stowaway wilderness scout when they sail to South America in a house powered by balloons.  We’ll supply the popcorn.

Saturday, November 28 is Craft Day at the library.  Let the holidays begin! Don’t get swept up with shopping on Saturday, November 28 - come to the library instead.  Create Tree-Trimming Treasures with a variety of ornament stations.  All supplies will be provided.  Stop in anytime between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Bring the family and your creativity!

The library will be closed Wednesday, November 11th in honor of Veteran's Day. The library will also be closed Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 to celebrate Thanksgiving. Enjoy your November holidays!

Thank You for Being a Friend

The Kilbourn Public Library will be holding its annual volunteer appreciation luncheon on Thursday, November 5.  Every year the library celebrates the contributions the Friends of the Library volunteer group makes to the library.  In addition to the funds they raise through their book sales and other fundraising efforts our volunteers put in lots of hours to support the library staff.  In fact, the volunteers as a group work enough hours throughout the year to equal that of a full time library employee. From all the staff at the library -thank you for being a friend.

Just for Teens

November
Teens!  You think you know vampires??  With New Moon coming out in theatres, get caught up on one of the earliest vampire movies out there—Nosferatu.  Expressionist master F.W. Murnau directed this creepy and chilling vampire film, the first cinematic interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Max Schreck’s riveting portrayal of the main character and Murnau’s moody direction result in a silent-era horror classic.  Don’t miss out.  Movie starts at 6:00 pm at the library on Wednesday, November 18th!  Teenagers only please.

December

Come to the Teen Café at the library on Wednesday, December 16th from 6 pm-8 pm.  We’ll have food, fun, and friends…along with laptops and a room just for teens!  Learn something super cool about the month of December while you’re here.  Teenagers only please.

January

GAME-ON!  Don’t get Sk00Led in 2010…so come to teen game night at the library on January 20th.  We’ll be gaming from 6 pm-8 pm.  Choose from Guitar Hero and Dance-Dance Revolution for PS2, as well as a variety of Wii Games.  Bring your own if you want.  Teenagers only please.

Holiday décor is our theme for our craft Tue-Do on Tuesday, November 10 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We will be involved in paper folding and design work. Take home an “original” created by you!

On Tuesday, November 24 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. it’s game day.  We’re learning to play Euchre and having fun.  Don’t know how to play?  We will teach you, so come for the good company & good time.

Library Book Club

ThingstheycarriedIn November, the library book club will be honoring Veteran’s Day by reading The Things They Carried.  This book, written by Tim O’Brien, is a collection of related stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. This New York Times best-seller was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award and has been called the greatest war book ever written. This month the library book club will be meeting at the library to discuss this powerful and compelling book on Monday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, November 18 at 1:30 p.m.  New members are always welcome. Copies of the book are available at the library.  Join us!

Computer Classes

Our introduction to personal computer class was a huge success and we will be offering additional classes in early December.  Possible topics include Microsoft Office software, internet searching, e-mail and more!  Watch the library website or call the library in the coming weeks for details.
