The November book selection is The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum. The book tells the dramatic true story of the fight for food safety in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, led by the inimitable Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley. By the end of the 19th century, food was dangerous. This was not by accident. Food manufacturers were knowingly selling harmful products. Unchecked by government regulation, basic safety, or even labelling requirements, they put profit before the health of their customers. Detailing the complex interchanges of industry, media and government regulation with bracing clarity, this eye-opening book offers a prescient perspective on the enormous social and political challenges we face today. We will meet to discuss this book on Monday, November 25 at 6:30pm and Wednesday, November 27 at 1:30pm. If you cannot join us in person, post a comment to our blog at kplbookclub.blogspot.com. The Poison Squad is the 2019-2020 UW-Madison Go Big Red Selection. Go Big Red is a shared reading experience with the goal of engaging not only the campus community, but the greater Wisconsin community in an academically focused reading experience and generating the discussion and exchange of diverse ideas.
